CMS held a press conference , with the Vice President, no less , to announce they caught $5.7 billion in fraudulent Medicare payments. Pop the champagne. Roll the confetti. Except Medicare pays out $900 billion a year and the GAO says 7-8% is improper. That's $60-70 billion walking out the back door annually. CMS caught 8% of it and booked the White House briefing room.
That's like a security guard catching one shoplifter at Walmart, calling CNN, and doing a victory lap through the parking lot while 12 other guys walk out with flat screens. But hey, the press release slaps.
